Danish Cord — tradition, design & quiet strength

First introduced in the early 20th century, Danish paper cord rose to prominence in the 1940s as a defining material of mid-century furniture design. Valued for its simplicity, strength, and understated beauty, it became central to Scandinavian design — and later found a natural home in Japanese interiors that share the same respect for craftsmanship, restraint, and material honesty.

Danish cord is unique. It is the only weaving material that carries both a name and a nationality

Made from twisted paper, Danish cord (also known as Danish paper cord) is created by tightly twisting long strips of flat paper into a durable rope, then winding it into coils. Despite its light appearance, it is remarkably strong, long-lasting, and sustainable — an eco-friendly material perfectly aligned with modern minimalist design.

Originating in Denmark’s mid-century furniture movement, Danish cord was embraced by iconic designers such as Hans Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl, and N.O. Møller.

During the Second World War, traditional materials such as rattan became scarce. Danish cord emerged as a practical solution  and went on to define an era.  Today, Danish cord sits comfortably at the intersection of Scandinavian and Japanese design. Its natural texture, quiet elegance, and functional beauty reflect shared principles found in both traditions: balance, durability, respect for materials, and beauty through restraint.

Strong yet flexible, breathable, repairable, and warm in appearance, Danish cord continues to be used for restoring vintage furniture and for weaving contemporary pieces that feel both grounded and modern.
